Vancouver Force Game Three Against LAFC
History did not repeat itself for LAFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps. After winning the First Round, LAFC lost their Round Two Best-of-3 to the Whitecaps, forcing a third game to determine who will advance to the Western Conference Semifinal against the Seattle Sounders who advanced after dominating Houston Dynamo in penalty kicks. The 'Caps steamrolled over the Black and Gold in a 3-0 route, spearheaded by two own-goals by LAFC, one in each half. "We have no one to blame but ourselves," head coach Steve Cherundolo said.
Vancouver, winless in their previous four matches at home, were heavily unfavored but were sparked by a 10th minute goal by their savior Ryan Gauld, the Scottish international who has now scored five goals in his last three playoffs matches, two of which were against LAFC.
Vancouver, who finished eighth in the Western Conference, added on another goal in the 13th minute, as LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead attempted to block a long-range shot by Gauld, accidentally redirecting it into the net past a stunned Hugo Lloris.
The second half began with LAFC frantically trying to get on the scoreboard pushing out 14 attempts, but thanks to the heroics of Yohei Takaoka, who registered three saves, along with his solid backline, were unable to create any dent in the hosts' lead. The only goal came off yet another own-goal, this time by Eddie Segura in the 68th minute.
Game Three will be played on Friday, Nov 8 at BMO Stadium at 8 p.m.
